Itron, a major U.S.-based energy technology company, has confirmed that it was targeted in a cyberattack in mid-April.
According to an official filing, hackers managed to get access to some of the company’s internal systems. The company said it was alerted about the intrusion, although it did not reveal who discovered it. After that, Itron acted quickly and removed the attackers from its systems. So far, there are no signs of further unauthorized access.
Itron has not shared details about the type of attack. It is still unclear whether ransomware was used or if the hackers made any demands. The company also hasn’t confirmed what kind of data or systems were affected.
However, Itron mentioned that there was no suspicious activity found in the customer-hosted parts of its systems. This suggests that the attack may have been limited to its internal IT network.
The company has informed law enforcement and has already activated its backup systems and emergency response plans. It also stated that its operations are still running normally for now.
Itron plays a critical role in global infrastructure. It provides smart technology for managing electricity, gas, and water systems, serving over 110 million homes and businesses worldwide.
Even though operations are stable, the company warned that it might need to make more legal disclosures. This could mean that sensitive data might have been involved, which would require further reporting under data protection laws.
At the moment, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the full impact is still being investigated.
