WhatsApp is trying out a new paid subscription called “WhatsApp Plus,” similar to Instagram Plus and Snapchat+. This plan mainly gives users more ways to change how the app looks, like icons, themes, and ringtones. It doesn’t add many strong new features.
Many users have already noticed this new option, including social media expert Matt Navarra. Meta has confirmed that testing is going on.
The company says this is an optional plan for people who want more control over how their chats are organized and how the app appears. It includes things like more pinned chats, custom lists, and new chat styles. For now, it’s only being tested with a small number of users.
There is no official price yet, but reports suggest it could cost around €2.49 per month in Europe and about 229 PKR in Pakistan. A one-month free trial may also be available.
With this plan, users may be able to pin up to 20 chats instead of just three in the free version. They can also set different themes, ringtones, and notification sounds for chats. However, there is no sign that this plan will remove ads from the Status section.
Years ago, WhatsApp charged a small yearly fee in some places. After it was bought by Facebook (now Meta), that fee was removed in 2016. Since then, the company has been earning mainly through business messaging and ads that bring users to chats.
This has become a big source of income for Meta. In late 2025, the company shared that its apps made strong revenue growth, with a large part coming from paid messaging on WhatsApp. It also said WhatsApp’s yearly earnings have crossed $2 billion.
Right now, this paid plan is only being tested in a few regions, so only a small number of users out of its huge global audience can try it. Because of that, it’s not expected to make a big financial difference anytime soon.
